According to a recent article in Science published by the Jambeck group at the University of Georgia, the plastic in the ocean has mostly come from Asia (~82%) and only 2% has come from the US and Europe. The remaining 16% of plastic is from the rest of the world. This news does not provide an occasion to celebrate, as the 2% accounts for 96,000-254,000 metric tons of plastic per year entering our oceans. Think of all of the plastics bioaccumulating into our seafood.
